A Rough Guide

Colonel Fairfax is committed to the Tower on trumped-up charges.

To thwart his enemy he arranges to marry Elsie Maynard, a rover player.

But with the help of men he served with in the past (the Merylls) he escapes.  Leaving Jack Point, who travels with Elsie and had planned to marry her somewhat shocked.

Subtle interplays between the evil jailor and Merylls provide the comic relief in a show with a more poignant ending than is the norm in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.
