Ruddygore
or The Witch's Curse

A Rough Guide

Many years ago the first baronet of Ruddygore spent his time persecuting witches.  As a result he, and his descendants, were cursed to commit a crime-a-day or die.

Under the watchful eye of the portrait gallery of ancestors each baronet has complied.

As ever a local beauty, Rose Maybud is loved by a local, Robin Oakapple, a farmer.  Richard Dauntless, a worldly sailor pleads Robin's case with Rose a wedding ensues.  At the wedding it is revealed by Sir Despard that Robin is, in fact, Ruthven Murgatroyd the Baronet but he had fled to escape his title and the curse.  Leaving the responsibility to his brother Despard.

Rose transfers her attentions to Richard (typical!).

We then have fun with Sir Ruthven being chastised by the ghosts of his ancestors.  Ruthven is reformed and then comes up with a cunning plan to break the curse.  As ever with a bound folk are free to marry the most, or least, likely person.

Last Performed in 2001 at the Guildhall in Derby and at the International G&S Festival in Buxton.
