Iolanthe
or The Peer and the Peri

A Rough Guide

A Fairy, Iolanthe has been banished for marrying a mortal.

Her Son, Strephon (Half-a-Fairy) is in love with a ward of court, Phyllis.

But the Lord Chancellor and all of the House-of-Lords are also in love with Phyllis.

After much confusion and on the point of the Chancellor marrying Phyllis himself it transpires that Strephon is...his son!

So after some quick modifications to Fairy Law all ends well and even the Queen of the Fairies finds herself a beau, in the shape of a newly created fairy guardsman.
